The Barcelona International Women’s Film Festival takes place from 7 to 17 June, offering some of the finest contemporary and classic women’s works.

A total of 22 women directors from several generations, including Judith Colell, Lydia Zimmermann and Rosa Vergès, have given their own special take on the poet Maria Mercè Marçal in Ferida Arrel: Maria Mercè Marçal.

That film will open the International Women’s Film Festival, an event to celebrate the 20th anniversary with the “One Anthology“, a retrospective section. Its programme was compiled by an online participatory (public jury) vote between the films seen at the festival over the last two decades.

This special programme includes names like Alice Guy and Germaine Dulac. You can see a half-feature by the latter, which has never before been shown on these shores: Le cinéma au service de l’histoire.

The festival will also be offering its regular sections and activities, such as El sexe dels àngels [The Sex of Angels], Interrogar el passat [Interrogating the Past], Imaginar el futur [Imagining the Future], and El vídeo del minut: un espai propi [One-Minute Video: a Space of One’s Own], an invitation to all women to express themselves through audiovisual language.

The International Women’s Film Festival will be held at several venues and amenities: the Filmoteca, the CCCB, the Plaça de la Virreina in Gràcia, the Virreina Centre de la Imatge and the Centre de Cultura de Dones i Espai Francesca Bonnemaison. But if that’s not enough for you, you can always download the festival’s films online, including through the Filmin portal.
