Ariane 5 “Ciutat de Barcelona”.

The Catalan capital has long held scientific ambitions. Proof of this can be seen in the fact that Barcelona is one of the few cities in the world that can claim to have an asteroid and a rocket named after it.

In 1921, the Catalan scientist Josep Comas i Sol , after whom one of the crates on the Moon is named, was looking through his rudimentary telescope, when he discovered an asteriod, which he christened “Barcelona”.

Much closer to the present day, Barcelona made its second contribution to space exploration, when the rocket Ariane 5, bearing the name “Ciutat de Barcelona”, was launched on 08 December 2006.
