Barcelona is to be one of the European host cities for the world’s most important urban and extreme sports event: the X Games, from 2013 to 2015, by the ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network).
It has already had a taste of these extreme action sports, with the Barcelona Extremes, and now Barcelona is set to play host to the X Games, along with five other cities.
As with Iguazú and Munich, Barcelona will be joining up with the other three host cities for these games –Aspen, Tignes and Los Angeles– and will be holding the skate, BMX, rally and moto X competitions, plus competitions in a further sixteen disciplines, from 9 to 12 May from 2013 to 2015.
Montjuïc mountain will become the centre of extreme sports for four days, with Moto Dirt and Rally Car events being held at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, the mega ramp at the Palau Sant Jordi and the Half Pipe at the Olympic Pool.
There will also be a complementary activity area offering exhibitions, a children’s area and an urban sports park inside the Olympic Ring.
To mark the event, the City Council has pledged to increase the city’s number of skate parks. This will also bring the city a good legacy of urban-sport infrastructures.
