Music in Barcelona, always!

Posted on 4 July 2007 in Barcelona, always!

Barcelona is currently going through a period of development and expansion in music, not only in terms of infrastructure but also in terms of performances and the popularity of musical events in the city. The construction of new facilities and the restoration of live performance venues are central to this process.

With the work to rebuild the Gran Teatre del Liceu opera house, the continuing work on the new Auditorium (which will be home to the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona, the Museu de la Música and the Conservatori) and the planned cultural complex with a chamber music concert hall at the church of església de Sant Francesc de Paula, the network of music venues in the city is now undergoing a radical transformation.

The classical music season in Barcelona has a long tradition. But over the last few years there has been an increase in activity in the contemporary and experimental music scene, which is now well established here. Important events include the Festival de Músiques Contempor nies (Festival of Contemporary Music), which covers works and composers of the 20th century, the Festival de Músiques Avançades Sònar, an “advanced music meeting” for electronic music and multimedia arts, Interrock, a project created by the Barcelona City Council with the aim of stimulating the panorama of modern music in the city, the BAM independent music festival and, finally, the Gr cia “sound area”, an experimental music project in the Gr cia district, with concerts at unusual venues.

These activities serve as a complement to the ordinary musical events of the city, increasing the range of activities and promoting on-going creativity in music.

For independent promoters music is one of the most popular cultural consumer items and is a growth area, with a steady increase in the number of events held at private venues and a stable programme, in which the jazz clubs andassociated initiatives stand out for sheer quality of performance. Barcelona is, of course, also generally included in the European and world tours of international pop and rock stars.
