Hotel Barcelona Universal: cruiser review

Stayed here for 2 nights after we had completed cruise we were booked in for a standard room.
English speaking front desk staff for the most part friendly staff. Hotel Barcelona Universal which is under the same chain of “Barcelona Nunez i Navarro Hotels” for being rated a 4 star don’t quite see how. We have stayed at Hotel Jazz at the beginning of our vacation – same chain with lesser star rating and had a better experience. I will say the rooms were clean, comfortable beds (Though we had two twin beds placed together to make a larger bed and the beds would move apart by the end of the night), however for the price you pay, I would have expected a more luxurious place. Hotel modern but looked worn.

Mainly we are sure when onces read review and want somewhere quiet, comfortable and close to the cruise terminal and thus, choose this hotel. However, it was chaotic at noon check-out, Saturday with people all checking out at the same time. With the way the front desk is situated with a large cement pole and couches it was over whelming.

Universal Room

Universal Room

We were able to get a room by 1PM and were given a room on the 8th floor – It is on a busy road and although you could still hear quite a lot of traffic noise at night. The rooms are not sound proof at all, so you will also hear corridor noises very distinctly.

It is a short walk away from Port Vell and La Rambla. We didn’t use the metro but there is a stop near by.

The free wi-fi is fast and if you don’t have your laptop with you they have computers you can use at the business center on the 9th floor and two computers in the lobby. If you need to print something you have to ask the front desk staff to use one of their computers.

Never ate at the restaurant so cannot comment there. With so many hotels in Barcelona not sure if I would stay here again.

Hotel Barcelona Universal: Highly recommended!

We stayed at Hotel Barcelona Universal for 4 nights during the mid of October. We chose the hotel because it looked fine on the website, had reasonable rates and, last but not least, its central location (metro station Parallel right in front of the hotel). Beautiful, clean room, friendly staff, wireless lan and wide choice at breakfast. Highly recommended!

Joan Miró: The ladder of escape

Renowned as one of the greatest Surrealist painters, filling his paintings with luxuriant colour, Joan Miró worked in a rich variety of styles. This is a rare opportunity to enjoy more than 150 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints from moments across the six decades of his extraordinary career. This exhibition is co-organised by Tate Modern and Fundació Joan Miró.

The first major exhibition of Joan Miró to be held in Barcelona for amost 20 years.

The first major exhibition of Joan Miró to be held in Barcelona for amost 20 years.

The exhibition also traces an anxious and politically engaged side to Miró’s work that reflects his passionate response to one of the most turbulent periods in European history. Working in Barcelona and Paris, Miró tracked the mood of the Spanish Civil War and the first months of the Second World War in France. It also shows that, behind the engaging innocence of his imagery, lies a profound concern for humanity and a sense of personal and Catalan national identity. Extraordinary works from different moments of his career celebrate his roots in his native Catalonia.

Fundació Joan Miró is located at Montjuic, accesible by Funicular from Parallel station, just in front of Hotel Barcelona Universal. You can reach Fundació Joan Miró also from Plaza Espanya, by bus line 50, stopping next to B-Hotel.

More information can be found at Fundació Joan Miró website.

The whitest party: Sensation Barcelona

After a spectacular world premiere with an audience of 40,000 in Amsterdam in July, the new edition is going to fill the Palau Sant Jordi with people dressed in white and ready to dance to this new festival concept.

On the 8th of October 2011, Sensation will make its return to Barcelona. The venue, Palau Sant Jordi, will be transformed into Innerspace, making it the second city to host Sensation’s latest theme after the premiere in the Amsterdam Arena.

Sensation started in Amsterdam in the year 2000. Since then, over 1,5 million visitors in seventeen countries have experienced what is arguably the world’s most spectacular dance and music phenomenon. Each year, Sensation tours the globe with a completely new show. Consistently taking the acclaimed theme ‘be part of the night, dress in white’ to new heights, Sensation’s aim is to bring a positive message to a growing global audience.

Beautiful room, clean and have everything you need

We had a great stay in Hotel Barcelona Universal for five nights from 14 till 19 September. We stayed there during our Herbalife Extravaganza, because it looks good on the website and it was central to Palau Saint Jordi, where the convention was.
It was better than expected. Friendly staff who appoliziged that we had no rooms together (3 families). Beautiful room, clean and have everything you need.
There was a wide choice at breakfast. The nice swimming pool on the roof gives us a nice view over the city and a pleasant relaxing bath.
This hotel will be our standard whan we visit Barcelona. Till next year!

Hotel Barcelona Universal review

Dear all at Barcelona Universal Hotel.

Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our stay at your hotel. We stayed 14th August -20th August. Our Room excellent, bathroom too. All the staff were very nice and efficient. Great advice on buses and other travel details at the front desk. The gentleman who took the cases into the store was really nice, we had to go to our bags on many occasions. Nothing was too much trouble for him. We arrived early Sunday from the night train from Paris.
The buffet breakfast is one of the best we have experienced excellent choice and kept us going until evening .
The city is fantastic all the art and buildings, you must be very proud of. Pity that so much bad press about pick pockets, we just acted sensibly walking through the local streets was no problem at all. We live in a very multicultural city in England and found the streets around the hotel interesting and not at all worrying.

There was so much to see so we may come back for a visit again as we didn’t get to visit all the great galleries and old streets. Perhaps a few more days on the beach.

I think the only thing we missed is having a kettle in our room to make tea and coffee in the afternoon, must be a British thing!

Thank you all again for a very nice stay at your hotel, all the emails we sent before we arrived were dealt with promptly and this gave us a good room.
Kind regards

Excellent and Personalized Service – Wonderful Hotel

My 2 grown daughters, wife and I stayed in two rooms at the Barcelona Universal Hotel from July 29-August 1. It was a wonderful stay. The hotel staff assisted us with hotel and non-hotel matters: from recommendations for great restaurants and the best way to use the subway, to changing my daughters’ room (within 5 minutes!) when one of my daughters said the mattress was too soft for her taste and to arranging a late check-out. Our rooms were very clean and inviting. The hotel offered excellent value for the rate which we paid. In recent years, I can’t remember having a better hotel experience.

The only recommendation for improvement that I would make is the result of me being a vegetarian. The buffet breakfast (which was included in our rate) had an excellent range of meats (which I don’t eat), but had very little in the way of salads or fresh vegetables. There was some cheese, fresh fruit and yogurt, but only tomatoes (no lettuce, cucumbers or salads as such).  I would encourage the addition of fresh salads or salad vegetables.

I would enthusiastically recommend this hotel to friends (even vegetarians) and will choose it again if/when we return to Barcelona.
