Claude Cahun

Claude Cahun

Lucy Schwob used the pseudonym Claude Cahun during her multidisciplinary artistic career. She was a writer, a woman of theatre and a photographer, and for years unjustly forgotten about until the 1980s when two exhibitions on her were held in France.

This exhibition has organized by Jeu de Paume, París, and coproduced with La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, Barcelona, and The Art Institute of Chicago. The purpose for the exhibition Claude Cahun is to bring the image of this artist up to date and highlight her continued validity with regard to contemporary practices and discourses.

Nonetheless, this exercise is based, not only on pointing to contemporary works, artists or discourses that invite one to think of Cahun as a precedent, but also on exploring the successive ways in which the critical frames through which “her” work has been studied have been updated themselves. These revivals and evaluations of Cahun from different perspectives have thrown light on and complemented the many different facets of the artist’s creative practice.

Concert commemorating

Concert commemorating

Montserrat Caballé made her debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu and in Spain on Monday 7 January 1962, in Richard Strauss’ Arabella.

This concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Liceu debut of the great soprano from Barcelona. Her emotional and professional relationship with the theatre was soon consolidated by her performances as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly. These were the first steps in a long and close partnership that has included many of her most seminal interpretations: Norma, Roberto Devereux, Maria  Stuarda, Lucrezia Borgia, Il Pirata, Aida, Un ballo in maschera, I vespri sicilianni, and others. The Liceu awarded her its Gold Medal in 1966 and now rounds off this sincere tribute with an exhibition in the Foyer recalling the most significant and memorable events in an exceptional joint biography.

Hotel 1898, located in Las Ramblas, is the nearest hotel to Gran Teatre del Liceu.

Hotel Barcelona Universal: cruiser review

Stayed here for 2 nights after we had completed cruise we were booked in for a standard room.
English speaking front desk staff for the most part friendly staff. Hotel Barcelona Universal which is under the same chain of “Barcelona Nunez i Navarro Hotels” for being rated a 4 star don’t quite see how. We have stayed at Hotel Jazz at the beginning of our vacation – same chain with lesser star rating and had a better experience. I will say the rooms were clean, comfortable beds (Though we had two twin beds placed together to make a larger bed and the beds would move apart by the end of the night), however for the price you pay, I would have expected a more luxurious place. Hotel modern but looked worn.

Mainly we are sure when onces read review and want somewhere quiet, comfortable and close to the cruise terminal and thus, choose this hotel. However, it was chaotic at noon check-out, Saturday with people all checking out at the same time. With the way the front desk is situated with a large cement pole and couches it was over whelming.

Universal Room

Universal Room

We were able to get a room by 1PM and were given a room on the 8th floor – It is on a busy road and although you could still hear quite a lot of traffic noise at night. The rooms are not sound proof at all, so you will also hear corridor noises very distinctly.

It is a short walk away from Port Vell and La Rambla. We didn’t use the metro but there is a stop near by.

The free wi-fi is fast and if you don’t have your laptop with you they have computers you can use at the business center on the 9th floor and two computers in the lobby. If you need to print something you have to ask the front desk staff to use one of their computers.

Never ate at the restaurant so cannot comment there. With so many hotels in Barcelona not sure if I would stay here again.

The Hotel Barcelona Universal is about a 6 minute walk to the Rambles

We selected this hotel based on the location and the reviews, and having stayed there
I must say it was our best stay of our entire trip.
We arrived early morning and as our suite was not ready we sat in the hotel lobby. My daughter had caught the stomach bug on the plane and had fever. The management was kind enough to give us a temporary room so that she could rest. What a nice gesture, would never forget this.
The hotel is very clean, our suite on the 9th floor was out of this world, the sheer space, comfy beds, safe and cleanliness was superb.
The staff and management of the hotel are very friendly, providing guidance, maps, directions and suggestions e.g. they told us to get the T10 which was more economical.
The location is key, the hotel is about a 6 minute walk to the Rambles, all the streets are safe. We used to walk back to our hotel at 1 am with no concerns.
We started our day of with a wonderful warm buffet breakfast , wonderful coffee at the hotel, this gave us a great start to our day.
I would definitely rate this hotel as a 5 star, and would definitely stay here again.

Barcelona Walk Against Hunger!

This Sunday 29 May, the Walk against Hunger, organised around the world by the United Nation’s World Food Programme, is taking place for the second time in Barcelona.

Barcelona Walk against hunger!

Barcelona Walk against hunger!

A gentle 5 kilometres, it will set off from the Arc de Triomf, on Passeig de Lluís Companys, at 10 am. finishing at 11.30 am at the latest.

The walk will cover the Ronda de Sant Pere, Plaça de Catalunya, the Rambla, Portal de la Pau, Passeig de Colom and Passeig d’Isabel II, Avinguda del Marquès de l’Argentera, Passeig de Picasso, Avinguda de Pujades before reaching Passeig de Lluís Companys again, by the Arc de Triomf.

Just before the walk starts, the organisers will hand out IDs in the marquees located at the starting point, which participants will have to return once they have completed the walk. They will then receive a souvenir gift in recognition of their contribution to the walk.

This idea is to collect money towards eradicating hunger in the world (for every euro collected, four food rations can be given to the World Food Programme) while raising society’s awareness of a serious problem affecting millions of people across the globe. People are free to give as much as they want.

The Walk against Hunger will take place simultaneously in about 250 cities in 70 countries. It is one of the best ways to show solidarity while spending a pleasant Sunday morning in the open air, so it is hoped that thousands of people will take part in this worthy cause.

The Rambla is dolling itself up for its annual festival from 1 to 10 October. Coinciding with the Mare de Déu del Roser festivities there will be all kinds of events taking place on this iconic avenue.

La Rambla - city festival

La Rambla - city festival

Since 1962, the Friends of the Rambla Association has been awarding honours to people and associations that have shown their love for the Rambla and paid special attention to the avenue in their personal, professional or association-based lives. Hotel 1898, located in La Rambla 109, is an active member of this association.

This year’s winners include Federico Mayor Zaragoza, one of the leading supporters of the Rambla’s bid to become a World Heritage Site, the Jamboree, for its contribution towards raising the level of the city’s jazz scene and boosting the cultural activities going on around the avenue, and Maria Dolors Álvarez, for the 26 years she has given to the Friends of the Rambla Association.

Next Sunday 10 of October, on the final day of the festival, any women among you named Roser are in luck because there will be a special performance of the “Mètode Grönholm” at the Poliorama theatre, where they and their companions will enjoy a 20% discount.

Great stay and great price at B-Hotel!

We  stayed for 5 days in the wonderful B – Hotel. The hotel is situated close to the subway station that takes you to the Rambla in 10 minutes.

The roof terrace and swimming pool is great for relaxing after walking the streets of Bracelona !  The cleaning service was excellent, as was the rest of the staff, always willing to help with a smile and they know what is going on and where to go in Barcelona ! We would definitely recommend this hotel and plan to stay there again.

Secret Guide to the Rambla at Palau Virreina

The project entitled Secret Guide to the Rambla (Guia Secreta de la Rambla) invites people to examine its photographic, artistic and other visual representations of the area. The Rambla is most certainly one of Barcelona’s most iconic and universal spaces, for that reason we recommend to discover one of the Rambla’s jewel, the Hotel 1898 in Las Ramblas!

The exhibition, entitled Instantànies de carrer (Street Snapshots), displays a century’s worth of history in the form of 267 photographs of various kinds, from street photos taken at the start of the 20th century to critical photocreations with the current “postcardisation” of the Rambla. The Ocaña 1973-1983 exhibition focuses on the role of this artist, Ocaña, a pioneer of the gay movement and an entire period, within the underground and alternative cultural movements during the 1970s and until he died 1983.

To this end, “Secret Guide to La Rambla” places photographs by Frederic Ballell, Gabriel Casas, Josep Maria Sagarra, Brassaï, Dora Maar, Ramon Masats, Colita, Xavier Miserachs, Josep Cunties and Manel Armengol alongside images by Eva Serats, Red Caballo, Àngels Margarit, OriolVilanova, Peter Downsbrough, Jaume Pitarch, Beat Streuli and Frank Berger, amongst many others.

Jazz Hotel: perfect 1st time in Barcelona

On our first visit to Barcelona our stay at Hotel Jazz enhanced it. The Hotel staff were very friendly, attentive and met our every request without question.

Our room was clean, large and comfortable and the pool was a great place to relax after a day sightseeing in this great city.

When we return we will stay again at this or another Núñez i Navarro Hotel.
