Montjuic offers explorations into the past: MNAC is giving an exhibition on the 19th-century French Realist painter, Gustave Courbet while the CaixaForum is presenting an archaeological exhibition on the ancient Mexican site of Teotihuacan, whose fame rests on its enormous step pyramids.

If you fancy a bit of thought-provoking photojournalism, then you mustn’t miss the exhibition on at the CCCB featuring photographs taken by Gervasio Sanchez and showing the parallels between forced disappearances under oppressive regimes in South America, the Middle East and Spain.

Symbol of Barcelona's Historical memory

In 1919 the architect Puig i Cadafalch built four columns in Montjuïc symbolising the stripes of the Catalan flag but they were demolished by Primo de Rivera in 1928 are back again opposite the Magic Fountain in Montjuïc.

Now, almost ninety years later, the Puig i Cadalfach columns can be seen again in all of their glory opposite the Magic Fountain in Montjuïc, following the removal of the scaffolding around them.

The columns are 20 metres high and have been erected at their original site in the Plaça del Marquès de la Foronda.

The monument was reconstructed using the architect’s original plans and period photographs.

The project will include improved paving for the surrounding area. What is more, the area underneath the columns will be the site for a new Line 2 metro station connecting the Fira de Montjuïc with Gran Via.

New plan for Montjuic Park

New plan for Montjuic Park

A new twelve-year plan that aims to increase the number of green and open spaces while restricting the construction of new amenities. The plan aims to ensure that 75% of the park, which covers over 300 hectares, are earmarked for open spaces and green areas.

To keep the mountain’s unique identity and boost its appeal, the plan includes designating Montjuïc’s cliffs as areas of natural interest, conserving areas with archaeological remains and updating the boundaries o itsf protected historical gardens.

Actions planned include reducing the flow of private motor vehicles in the area while promoting more sustainable transport models, such as public transport, bicycles and pedestrians.

The area included in the plan is bounded by the cemetry to the south west, the Ronda Litoral (coastal ring road), Passeig de Montjuïc, Carrer Nou de la Rambla, Passeig de l’Exposició, Passeig de Santa Madrona, Carrer de la Guàrdia Urbana, Avinguda Rius i Taulet, Avinguda Marquès de Comillas, Carrer de la Dàlia, Carrer de la Guatlla, Carrer de la Font Florida and the park of the same name, Carrer dels Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat i Mare de Déu del Port up to Fossar de la Pedrera.
