The City Council is going to distribute free cotton bags for daily shopping

Posted on 24 December 2008 in Barcelona, always!

To coincide with European Waste Prevention Week, the Council’s environment department is launching a campaign to make the public think more about reducing the use of plastic bags to do their daily shopping.

This means from 1 December, everyone can pick up a cotton bag at one of the city’s Green Points. They are foldable, practical and easy to carry around. 300,000 of them are being given out.

Barcelona uses 4 million plastic bags and Catalonia 14 million. Each bag has an average life of 15 minutes but can take 500 years to decompose. In fact, plastic bags represent 22% of urban waste.

Barcelona’s environmental protection programme (Agenda 21) has as one of its aims reducing waste production and increasing recycling.
