The future of Plaça Les Glòries: Canòpia Urbana project

Plaça Les Glòries future is starting to take shape. Almost a month after the 10 short listed ideas were chosen for the Restricted Competition for Plaça de les Glòries Open Area Urban Project, the jury tasked with choosing the winning proposal have reached a unanimous decision: “Canòpia Urbana” (Urban Canopy), from the Agence Ter & Ana Coello de Llobet Jointy Venture.

This central area recognises Diagonal as a territorial civic hub (by turning it into a pathway for the exclusive use of pedestrians and cyclists), and the “green” Diagonal of Meridiana and Camí Comtal.

So the idea proposed is to turn Les Glòries into a key element uniting Trinitat, Sagrera and Ciutadella parks. It also includes the construction of a viewpoint for such iconic city areas as Montjuïc, the Sagrada Família and the Torre Agbar.

Public transport is also expected to concentrate on the southern side of the square, so enabling interconnectivity between the metro, bus and tram. The use of smart technologies for lighting and watering systems will also allow a reduction in resources.

The next step in the transformation of Les Glòries will be the production of the public area’s planning design, which is scheduled for completion in 2014. The aim is to have the master plan processed and approved in 2015 and have the square urbanised during the next term of office.

The jury also wished to award a special mention to the Land of Opportunities proposal. From 11 February to 5 March The winning idea, the special mention proposal and the other finalists’ proposals will put on public display at the Barcelona Design Hub, in an exhibition featuring all the materials presented during the competition.
