Barcelona’s Drassanes Reials, the medieval shipyards, will be hosting until next 6 September NEW DATES: until October 4th the exhibition “Tutankhamen: La tomba i els seus tresors” (Tutankhamon: his tomb and its treasures), a spectacular exhibition where visitors can emulate Howard Carter and take a close-up look at the tomb of the most famous pharaoh in history.
This exhibition, covering 800 square metres and aimed at educating as well as entertaining, was planned by Wulf Kohl, a German artist who has been living in Cairo for over thirty years, and by Paul Heinen, a Hamburg project designer.
The Drassanes will be showing three of the four funeral chambers and the treasures of Tutankhamen’s tomb, which cannot even been seen together in the Cairo Museum.
A hundred Egyptian artisans worked meticulously over the years to construct the pieces of the pharaoh’s funeral furnishings following traditional methods, to enable the exhibition to reproduce exactly and to the original scale the tomb and over a thousand replicas of the most important items found by the archaeologist Howard Carter nearly 90 years ago.
Going round the exhibition, visitors will pass through three chambers of the tomb in succession: the antechamber, the treasure chamber and the funeral chamber with its sarcophagus, covering a total 100 square metres.
You will be able to admire the replica quartz sarcophagus as well as the chapels surrounding it, (the originals are in the Cairo Egyptian Museum), plus the mysterious golden-figure in their chapels, the mummy’s golden jewels, the war chariots and the famous mask.
Tutankhamen, who was crowned pharaoh at the tender age of 7 and who died under mysterious circumstances while still very young, at about the age of 19, is one of the most enigmatic figures in Egyptian history, given that his successors erased his name from every monument, so that it never appeared in any royal lists.
