The new mascot for the 15th FINA World Swimming Championships in Barcelona 2013 has been revealed to the public for the first time. It is called Xop and the mascot represents a drop of water inspired by Gaudí’s mosaics.
Created by Albert Mir, a Minorca-born artist living in Barcelona, the mascot was presented during a ceremony at the City Hall’s Sala Ciutat, where it was able to shake hands with everyone present.
The ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Mayor for Quality of Life, Equality and Sports, Maite Fandos and attended by the President of the Catalan Swimming Federation, Enric Bertran, the President of the Spanish Swimming Federation, Fernando Carpena, and the former athlete Gemma Mengual.
The new member will be the ambassador of the FINA World Swimming Championships 2013, as well as the Planet Water project, under which it aims to champion the responsible consumption and use of this essential resource and join in the work to reclaim the universal right for all the world’s children to learn how to swim and involve themselves in the future of our planet.
